What Does this Transvaginal ultrasound Result Mean?

Hi - I had a pelvic/transvaginal ultrasound done recently and the results show there is a 2.3 x 2.6 x2.5 cm cyst on my left ovary. It states that it is hypos choice and contains fine low level internal echoes. It is noted that there are possible small internal septa toons within the cyst, which shows a hemorrhagic cyst. My Dr just told me my report looked good and showed no abnormalities and started me on progesterone. She originally said there were no signs of cysts. I asked for a copy of my radiology report and noted the above findings. I m wondering if I should get a second opinion or need to worry. My original symptoms were grin pain, heavy and frequent menstrual cycles, spotting in between periods and bloody cervical mucus 12 days after the onset of my period.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Hemorrhagic cysts in the ovaries can happen in the case of endometriosis and are generally not dangerous. Even some of the symptoms can happen with it.

You will need to follow up on the cyst with transvaginal ultrasound in a couple of months and see if it is growing or not. If the cyst reaches 4 cm then the need for follow up is more obvious and if it reaches 6 cm might need to be operated on (rarely this happens)

I hope I have answered to your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Antoneta Zotaj, General & Family Physician
